Manhattan Country School is unique among independent schools in New York City. Founded in 1966, it began with a firm commitment to racial, cultural and economic pluralism and it has continued to honor this goal. MCS ranks first among the country's private, non-sectarian schools in its racial and cultural diversity among students and faculty and in the magnitude of its scholarship program. An article in "Crisis" magazine of the NAACP has cited MCS as "the only realistically integrated private elementary school in New York City." Thirty years after its founding, Manhattan Country School serves as a model in education to both public and private schools throughout the country in the face of prevailing racial isolation.
