The Harlem YMCA has a rich tradition of helping community youth meet today's challenges and fulfill their potential. We recognize that the young people of today will be the adults, parents and leaders of tomorrow. The Harlem YMCA , as a community institution, recognizes its obligation to provide vibrant, innovative programs that help youth develop the character needed to become productive citizens. Since its founding at the turn of the century, the Harlem YMCA has been the cultural and spiritual center of New York City's African-American community. Its members and supporters comprise a who's who of African-Americans who have made their mark in almost every field of human endeavor, such as: Langston Hughes, Malcolm X, Dr. George Washington Carver, Jesse Owens, Paul Robeson, Joe Louis, Eartha Kitt, Cicely Tyson, Sidney Poitier, Danny Glover, and Jackie Robinson. Today, the Harlem YMCA continues as the hub of Greater Harlem, where people of all ages and cultures meet. We strive to offer services that respond to the needs of this rapidly changing community and to provide programs that provide enhancement of the quality of life for all.
