Dance Theatre of Harlem was founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell, former principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, as his personal commitment to the people of Harlem following the asassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. A true pioneer in the field of dance, Dance Theatre of Harlem has established new horizons in the history of classical ballet, bringing to it a uniquely American perspective - one born and nurtured in New York City. Its founding has been motivated by the idea that arts could inspire and challenge young people to strive for excellence in all their endeavors. |
