Computers for Youth (CFY) was created to place computer technology into the homes of children in need and to provide them with a network of support services: training, technical support, on-line mentoring, and special web content. There are many successful programs, sponsored by schools, governments and private interests, dedicated to increasing computer technology in schools and community centers. There are few programs, however, dedicated to placing technology in the homes of children whose families couldn't otherwise afford it. It is the founding principle of CFY that providing computer technology to such children is important, doable, and rarely done. During the 1999-2000 school year, CFY will launch its first major initiative: Project Patchwork. The four components of this project are: Placing computers with Internet access in children's homes; providing training and technical support to children and their families; matching children with on-line mentors and tutors; and building innovative Web content. CFY has decided to distribute its computers in conjunction with public schools to ensure computers are used for educational purposes. CFY will also provide home computers to teachers to encourage communication with their students and parents. |
